Cluster Pays Slots

Cluster Pays slots award wins for groups of matching symbols that touch horizontally or vertically, replacing fixed paylines with grid-based clusters.

How Cluster Pays Works

In a Cluster Pays slot there are no paylines. A win is formed by a group of identical symbols that touch each other on the grid, and the payout depends on how many symbols are in the group. Most games require a minimum cluster size, commonly 5 symbols, and count connections horizontally and vertically only, so diagonal neighbours do not join a cluster.

Because the shape of the group does not matter, a cluster can snake across rows and columns in any direction. The paytable lists values by cluster size, often with a top tier for 15 or more symbols, and the largest groups of premium symbols pay far more than small groups of low-value ones.

Common Combinations

Cluster Pays is almost always paired with Tumble & Cascading Reels: winning clusters disappear, new symbols fall into the gaps, and one spin can produce a chain of wins. Grid games also use Wild Symbols heavily, since a single wild can connect two separate groups into one larger cluster.

Cluster Pays vs Pay Anywhere

The two systems are often confused. In Pay Anywhere games, matching symbols win wherever they appear, even when they are scattered across the grid. In Cluster Pays games, adjacency is the whole point: eight matching symbols spread across the grid pay nothing if no five of them touch. Reactoonz is a typical example, with 5 or more touching symbols needed on a 7×7 grid.
